1958  Again there are a number of White women who have legally married Indians, and who are resident on reserves and participate in Indian life as full band members, some of them taking office on or under the band council. This mixture through intermarriage is considerable, and, racially speaking, the legal Indians are becoming assimilated to the general population.
1959  The present number of legal Indians (i.e., Indians coming under the Indian Act as registered members of official bands) is nearing 160,000.
1966  There are probably as many Indian people in Canada who are not legally Indian as there are of those who have legal Indian status.
